Project description

The project opens a brand new topic in the Czech context - gender-based violence against female politicians and women active in public life. Although data for the Czech context is missing, international studies point out that this is a serious and widespread phenomenon both in real- and cyber space. The rare media reports covering the issue and citing Czech publicly active women confirm the existence of this problem. Violence or harassing behavior can thus be one of the main barriers to higher political and public participation of women.

Since this issue has not yet been specifically grasped and described in the Czech context, the ambition of the project is primarily to map the situation in the country, to inform the public about the existence and extent of the problem and to outline possible solutions. The project can be understood as a pilot, which would be appropriate to follow up with further steps and activities in the future.

The project activities follow 3 different levels of the problem. At the individual level, the focus will be on direct support for women in politics and public life. These women, thanks to workshops and seminars, will be able to reflect more on various forms of violence and be better able to defend themselves against them. At the systemic level, a round table will be used to open a discussion about the problem with relevant actors to name the causes and look for systemic solutions, including the transfer of good practice. These will then be summarized in a handbook and disseminated to key actors who can contribute to change. At the awareness level, with the help of the campaign, the general public's awareness of the existence of violence against politicians and publicly active women will be increased, and at the same time, the public will be more motivated to draw attention to this problem and demand its solution.
